| Teaching Tips When you teach writing
*** Remember that writing is the last of the four skills to develop. That means that students should have developed listening, speaking, and reading skills before they will be able to develop their writing skills. *** Early writing should be guided. This means that students are given a topic or a picture with a “word bank” or a group of words with which to write a select number of short, simple sentences. *** Remember that any writing should be done in stages. At first, focus on content. As long as students write about the topic or the picture, that’s fine. Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling, etc. at this point. Encourage and praise them as long as they have written to the topic or picture. *** Focus on accuracy in the final draft. After students have achieved relevant content, then you can begin to focus on accuracy including punctuation, spelling, indentation, etc. *** Ask students to correct their work. When you correct students’ writing, use circles or underlines without writing the correct answers. Ask students to go back and correct their own work. They can use a dictionary if needed. *** Always read drafts aloud. Reading the writing drafts aloud helps connect writing to the spoken language. Also, students practise listening while they hear their colleagues’ work. Encourage students when they read aloud. Save your corrections and make them one-on-one with students. *** Have students write in a journal. Keeping a journal is a way to get students to write every day about many topics — even personal ones. The writing should be short and simple. The topic can be as simple as “Yesterday I …”. Read parts of the journal weekly and write encouraging comments. There is no need to read every single entry in the journal. Choose an entry at random. Do not correct journals — they are to be a safe place for students to express themselves through the written word. It gives them a chance to practice writing without fear of criticism. At the same time, you get to see the development of a writer while you develop a special relationship with each student!
