Silence is the most important thing when listening. Students must understand that they won’t be able to understand if they don’t use their ears. Remind them that when they listen, they get new information and improve their pronunciation.

*** Before you start, ask them to listen for something specific. This gives them a clear task and keeps them focused.

*** Play the tape (or read the passage) at least 3 times. If students still didn’t hear what you asked them to hear, play it again.

*** Remind them they may not understand everything. It is important that they listen for the main meaning and not get caught up in the meaning of separate words. Reassure them that there will be at least one or two words they don’t understand, but if they understood the main idea, that’s the goal.

*** Have students repeat what they have heard. This combines the skills of listening and speaking. Students can repeat or recite what they have heard after they have completed the listening exercise.
