Remind students that reading helps us learn new things and enriches our vocabulary. When students understand why they do something, they are more positive about doing it.

*** Read aloud and ask students to follow along with their fingers silently. Following along with their fingers makes reading tactile — and therefore easier for students who learn through movement.

*** Before reading, call students’ attention to the pictures or title of the reading. Ask them to guess what they are going to read about.

*** Remind them that they will see new words. It is normal for students to stop and try to figure out the meaning of every new word. Remind students that they should read the whole sentence and then they should try to guess the meaning of the new words. Comfort them by telling them that the new words will be few and it will be easy to guess their meaning if they read the entire sentence (and perhaps the following sentence).

*** Check for understanding. Ask questions to make sure everyone understands. This is especially important if the reading is long.

*** Praise students for making correct predictions. After reading, remember to praise those students who were correct when they guessed about meanings of words or the content of the whole reading.
