Specifications for First Year Secondary Promotion Examination
2008-2009
English Time: 3 Hours
A - Language Functions (8 Marks)
1 Finish the following dialogue: (4 Marks)
A dialogue with Four (4) deletions is provided. The topic of the dialogue should be related to
the students everyday life, interests, hobbies, events and the like. The situation in which the
dialogue takes place is described briefly but clearly. The students are required to fill in the
deletions with the appropriate language forms. (One mark each)
2 Write what you would say in each of the following situations: (4 Marks)
Four (4) situations are described briefly but clearly. The students are asked to write the
appropriate language form they would say in each situation. ( One mark each)
B - Vocabulary and Structure (12 Marks)
3 Choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d: (5 Marks)
Ten (10) multiple-choice items (5 vocabulary and 5 structure) based on the Set Books are
provided. ( Half a mark each)
4 a Rewrite the following sentences using the word(s) in brackets, to give the same
meaning: (4 Marks)
Students are asked to rewrite Four (4) varied sentences using the word(s) in brackets,
without changing the meaning of the sentences. (One mark each)
OR
b Correct the underlined mistakes in the following paragraph: (4 Marks)
A short paragraph of Five (5) sentences, with Four (4) grammar mistakes, is provided.
Students are asked to correct the underlined mistakes. The first sentence should be
correct. (One mark each)
5 Read the text below, then write the word which best fits each space: (3 Marks)
A text of about Seventy (70) words is provided. The first sentence is written in full. Six (6)
words are deleted (all vocabulary). Students are asked to write the word which best suits
each space. (Half a mark each)
C - Reading Comprehension and Set Books (11 Marks)
6 Read the following passage, then answer the questions: (7 Marks)
An unseen text of about 180 words is provided. This may be a story, a factual text, a letter,
an e-mail or a dialogue. Most vocabulary and all structures should be from the Set Books.
The students are asked to answer Four (4) open-ended questions and Three (3) multiplechoice
ones. (One mark each)
These questions should test the following reading comprehension skills:
• skimming and scanning;
• inference: vocabulary in context-implied meaning;
• extracting information;
• critical thinking;
• understanding reference (e.g. pronouns and other reference words); and
• expressing a personal opinion (e.g. Do you think ...? Why/Why not?).
7 Answer Only Four (4) of the following questions: (4 Marks)
A set of Six (6) varied questions (3 factual and 3 opinion), based on the reading material in
the Set Books, are provided. Students are asked to answer Only Four (4) questions
(One mark each)
D - The Novel (7 Marks)
8 Answer the following questions:
The students are asked to answer:
a four open-ended questions
b three questions based on one quotation
The questions should test the students’ understanding of the plot, incidents and characters in
the two short stories assigned for each term. (One mark each)
E - Writing (8 Marks)
9 a Write a paragraph of Seven (7) sentences about ………:
The students are asked to write a paragraph of Seven sentences about a topic appealing
to their age, interests, likes, aspirations, etc. The title of the paragraph should be selfexplanatory
(i.e. easy to understand) No guidance is given.
OR
b Write a letter/an e-mail to ………:
The students are asked to write a personal letter or an e-mail. The topic of the letter/email
should be self-explanatory (i.e. easy to understand). The name of the sender and
addressee should be mentioned.
F - Translation (4 Marks)
10 a Translate into Arabic: (2 Marks)
Two (2) separate, short meaningful sentences, are provided. Students are asked to
translate them from English into Arabic.
b Translate into English: (2 Marks)
One short meaningful sentence is provided. Students are asked to translate it from
Arabic into English.
The translation question aims at testing the students’ awareness of the areas of conflict
between the mother tongue and target language.
(Total: 50 × 4/10 = 20 Marks for each term) | |
