Speak in short, simple sentences. The clearer you are, the more your students will understand and the more they will feel confident.

***Teach the students to use class routines to practice speaking. Asking permission for things like opening the window, turning on the fan, rubbing the board can be a way to get even shy students to speak.

*** Put students into small groups to practice dialogues they have memorised or used in the book.

*** Have the students try to create and practice their own dialogues. Students learn by doing, so letting them create their own dialogue gives them the chance to feel achievement and confidence while they practise the language.

*** Have students sing or recite songs. This can be a fun way to get everyone to speak. Choose easy, funny songs or poems that students can recite together. You will find some in your book.

*** Be careful about your reaction to students’ mistakes. It’s best to repeat the sentence in the correct way for the student to hear and then go on. Try not to embarrass the student or keep focusing on the mistake. Rather, encourage and praise him or her for trying!
